Que(e)ry Points (English)

Que(e)ry Points takes its name from the notes Dorothy Wordsworth made to herself in her journals: “Query: are the male and female flowers on separate trees?”

In a choose-your-own-adventure literary excursion, Que(e)ry Points puts the work of the English poet and diarist in conversation with that of German poet and author Annette von Droste-Hülshoff: two writers fascinated by the landscapes they inhabited and walked through, and whose relationship to their environments and to walking was shaped by chronic illness.

Interweaving work by Dorothy and Droste with new texts written in response to both authors, we invite you to join us in exploring how queerness and chronic illness inform the writing of both authors, as well as their relationship to landscape – writing against a kind of nature writing which centres the “lone enraptured male”, as Kathleen Jamie puts it.

Que(e)ry Points is a project by Polly Atkin, Anneke Lubkowitz and Annie Rutherford, with new translations created by Tayiba Sulaiman, Gemma Craig-Sharples, Lale Diklitaş and Sezgi Ceylanoğlu. The English audio is read by Polly Atkin, Tamsin Dearnley and Annie Rutherford.

The project is funded by Creative Scotland’s Four Nations International Fund. The translations of Droste’s ‘Restlessness’ and ‘From the Tower’ were originally commissioned in the framework of Trans|Droste, a project run by Burg Hülshoff Centre for Literature.
